The actor may harbour the same longings for affection as "the indigent" (whose burden is that of need); but in this case, these feelings are not expressed in reality, but in fiction, fantasy... The unreality of his appearance, like the whiteness with which he is coloured in this painting, does not, however, lessen his pathos, which he is able to transmit (and therein lies his art) to his audience.
