The paintings (I and II) entitled Little Girl in a Garden might have presented a more trivial scene: of a small being who, at her young age, has not developed the full use of her reason and finds it difficult to leave her world of play and instinctive, whimsical reactions. However, we are given here an intelligent child who, despite her age, knows she is being looked at and so turns her own gaze on the viewer, perhaps keeping her thoughts and questions to herself.
