The earlier painting of this series, Indigent II, has a nocturnal, urban setting. The figure’s humanity is manifested the skin of his face and hands.
This other Indigent (III), is pictured in the daytime. But here the sunlight lacks strength; the blue sky is gloomy, and the shadows in the figure’s face dull the brightness of his eyes. It is, rather, an inner portrait of the man: of his solitude and exclusion.
